Your home's 25-year checklist

A room-by-room look at what usually needs attention in a home built in the late 1990s.

Canterfield Creek homes are now 25 to 30 years old. That's a natural point to take stock: some parts of a house last a lifetime, while others are probably on their second round. Use this table to see where your home stands.

Lifespans from the InterNACHI Standard Estimated Life Expectancy Chart for Homes. Your home's actual condition depends on care, materials and past updates.

Where to start

  1. Safety first. Replace smoke and carbon monoxide detectors that are 10 years old or more.
  2. Water next. Roof, gutters, water heater and decks. Leaks and rot get expensive fast.
  3. Comfort and bills. HVAC and windows.
  4. Looks and value. Paint, flooring, countertops and kitchen updates.

Updating a late-1990s kitchen

Kitchens from this era often have solid cabinet boxes with dated doors, laminate counters and almond or white appliances. Painting or refacing cabinets, new counters, a backsplash, lighting and hardware can modernize the room for far less than a full gut remodel. Get quotes for both before you decide.

Keep a home record

Write down when each major item was installed or replaced, who did the work, and the warranty. It makes future decisions easier and is a plus when you sell.

Lifespans are typical ranges for well-maintained homes, not guarantees. Have a licensed professional inspect your home before deciding on a repair or replacement.

Get paid to get quotes
